Not true. The government of Singapore owns almost all of the land in Singapore, and they do alright. In the US, the federal government owns around half of all the land already outright.

Of course, to reiterate, I am not advocating the government literally own all the land, in the sense that it has the deed and whatnot. I am saying that the government should charge taxes equal to the unimproved rental value of the land. This ensure the government snags the land rent flow, but does not require the state actually own it.
